Clearing the Past Clears the Present

Old PhotosWhat would happen if you sat in a circle and took a minute to tune into a person or a thing with what I call “spacious detachment”? You could be tuning into antique bowl from the 18th century that “doesn’t feel quite right,” or a stoic-looking person in a photograph dating back to 1915. You do nothing more than hold a space for it, him, or her, to be brought back into balance.

This is one of the exercises I teach as clearing practice in my Space Clearing and Personal Clearing workshops. With nothing but a pendulum and a dowsing technique to help focus attention and get out of our own way (i.e. not think too much), it does raise the question: What are we “doing” exactly – if anything? The tarnished bowl is still there, and so is the photo. Nothing seems to be happening.

When you clear at this level of open-hearted awareness, everything is happening.

If you were participating in our circle you might discover that in that moment of tuning in, a subtle, but powerful shift is taking place. You might feel waves of emotion pass through you. You might feel a heaviness in your chest, or a tightness in your temples, or a ringing in your ears. You might catch a whiff of smoke or experience a strange taste in your mouth. You might yawn more than usual, or tear, or burp. To the degree that you don’t personalize any of it, you might notice that it all passes, just as quickly as it came. Like the weather.

After a few minutes of observing and sharing your experience with the group, you might notice that the object you’re clearing seems a little brighter. There are glints of blue and red you never noticed before. The man’s face in the photo seems softer somehow. You look around you and the room you’re sitting in feels enlivened. Less congested. Sparklier.

Perhaps you notice that YOU feel different: Your breathing is clearer and fuller…like a weight has been lifted.

As within, so without: welcome to a new way of “clutter clearing”! May you feel lighter, brighter, and more spacious – just from having read this!

With all my best wishes for a sparkly fall season,
Stephanie

Clearing "Clutter" vs. Clearing "Charge"

MultitaskingWhat is the difference between moving stuff out of the house or clearing as I describe above. As I see it, both activities constitute “clearing.”

The first, of course, requires some degree of heavy lifting and a good back. The second requires no heavy lifting and an open heart. The first kind is finite. The second is infinite.

Each compliments the other really well!

Practicing Spacious Detachment
at Kripalu

KripaluIf you’d like to get a good taste of what I mean by “spacious detachment,” you might consider taking the workshop I’ll be offering at the Kripalu Center next March 14-16, 2010.

The whole program is designed to soften and melt some of the hardwiring and resisting patterns associated with “holding on.” It doesn’t matter if your clutter challenges relate to things or thoughts. The practice of releasing the charge is exactly the same.

Your Spacious Self: Clear Your Clutter and Discvoer Who You Are is now listed beautifully on the Kripalu Web site. Check it out.

Stephanie on The Author's Show Radio

You’ll hear more from me on why traditional clutter-clearing modalities aren’t sustainable and what sets my book apart in a recent interview on the Author’s Show Radio. Hosted by Don McCauley, this 10-minute segment airs all day on Monday, October 19th.

To access the interview, click here. Though the Web site is a bit hard on the eyes, the interview is wonderful. Just close your eyes and enjoy!

Note: If you can’t make the show, no worries. I’ll upload the file onto my Web site after it airs.
