1. Coming Clear
“My name is Stephanie and I am a packrat. There, I said it. Yes, squirreled away in the dark recesses of my house I still have boxes of things I haven’t seen or used in over twenty years…” In this 500-word article space clearing expert Stephanie comes out of her own closet to shed light on a very human condition she calls “holding on” (and the emotional side-effects that come with it).
2. Living in Present Time
“Disarming the monkey mind (ego) and unwinding from a lifetime of spinning––“very important”––thought-bulletins like: ‘I need a cup of coffee…Caffeine is bad…My back hurts… I hate this…I love this…My back hurts…’ takes time.” In this 550-word article, Stephanie describes a very rocky two weeks spent at a meditation retreat where she is given permission (instructed, actually) to do absolutely nothing…and take nothing seriously.
3. Put Away Every Day
“I once saw this staggering statistic in Newsweek: ‘It takes the average American fifty-five minutes every day—roughly twelve weeks a year––looking for things they know they have but can’t find…’” In this 600-word article, Stephanie talks about the “softening” magic of putting things away and how a simple daily practice like “putting the toothpaste cap on” promotes new habits in clearing. In this article she invites the reader to try something “radical” every day for a week and “see what happens.”
4. Clearing Circles
“No matter what arises, one thing is almost always certain: People often walk away feeling lighter without having lifted a finger to clear at home!” In this 600-word article, Stephanie talks about what happens when people come together once a week (or month) to share their triumphs and challenges with clutter and clearing. She describes the listening circles she has designed and led for women, and outlines specifically how the reader can establish and maintain a clearing group in their hometown or neighborhood.
5. Inviting Wonder
“What would it feel like to hang out in that in-between place I call ‘Not-knowing’? To ask those mystery questions? To observe what happens when you take your time? To invite wonder…?” In this 500-word article, Stephanie talks about going to a Stevie Wonder concert where everything that could go wrong in an evening that held such promise, did. Her musings reframe an unpleasant experience.
6. Fear Factor
“I was sitting at my desk ready to dive into my manuscript when I got a call from my daughter’s middle school. ‘Your daughter was marked absent in homeroom today, is she sick?’ I’m thinking: I just put the kid on the bus.” In this 800-word excerpt from her book Your Spacious Self: Clear Your Clutter and Discover Who You Are, Stephanie uses her own moment of panic to talk about the amazing “playground of the mind” and the havoc it can wreak when we’re not paying attention.
