Even when things look impossible, bleak, or even hopeless, I love it when life throws us humans a curve ball that reminds us not to be so quick to judge (or throw in the towel).

Such is the case of an unlikely contestant on a show called “Britain’s Got Talent.” You may have heard about Susan Boyle or come across her astonishing performance on YouTube that is making the rounds. It pretty much speaks for itself. Get a Kleenex and watch this…

Susan Boyle BGT 2009

So what do you think?

Here’s what I’m thinking: The potential to achieve great things is just below the surface of our resistance to it. What gets in the way is the (meddlesome) mind that thinks it knows everything, knows better, or has it all figured out.

TRY THIS week’s clearing practice: [Pose these quietly to your self without thinking too hard, and just notice what arises…]

  • One thing I am not doing because I’m too afraid of what people might think…
  • The way I experience (feel) this resistance is…
  • One thing I can do right now to soften the resistance is…

Author’s Note: If you were hoping for Part 5 of my 7-part Space Clearing series today, worry not. I thought I’d take a little break. The series will resume in a week or two. Stay tuned…

The more I think of what happened when Susan Boyle sang “I dreamed a dream”, the more I believe that the effect of the performance went way beyond the achieving of the impossible. It was a big wake up call to all of us. Because what happens when we do do what we love, is constant happiness and freedom, and when we don’t, we get depression and crisis. And what you do with cynical and judgmental people (aka Simon)? You inspire them, you transcend your goodness, you do whatever makes you feel alive. And that is contagious. Based on Susan Boyle’s phenomenon, the great news are just in: our civilization has a hope.

What you write here is sooo beautiful and moving, Alex, (…I need another Kleenex…) I agree wholeheartedly!

You’re reminding me how I felt watching Susan Boyle’s innocence cut through Simon’s cynicism…right down to the core. I loved it. It IS contagious and so simple. Gives me hope too!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful wisdom on this page.
