Meet Them At the Door Laughing

smadoorway

Accepting what is. Laughing ’til it hurts. Birdsong. The feeling of pure spacious ease. Taking nothing personally. Joyful anticipation. Dancing or listening to really hot Latin music. Rumi’s infinite wisdom in the poem below.

Those are some of the ways I experience freedom.

How about you?

This being human is a guest house
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them all at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.”

–Rumi

This poem gets me every time! If you enjoyed it and would love another hit of “Rumi-ness” today, here’s more.

Wishing you a Happy Independence Day. Every day!

    Love Rumi,
Thanks for the July 4th reminder that being human is full bodied and not mental. I avoid the “herd” on holidays and go inward to do what my soul is most interested in. Today I am sending out my query letter on my book on freedom which is looking for a publisher! Happened to drop into twitter on a break and found your lovely post. I look forward to more of them.

      Dear Doris,
So glad you “happend” on the Rumi and thank you for your kind words! Good luck with your query letter and landing on the perfect publisher, too. May the journey be smooth, easy, and fun! Cheers, Stephanie
