Being A-Wear: Connecting with Clothes – Part 2

Shoes by Andy WarholLast week’s post was an opportunity to take a peek in the closet. (Read it here). Today’s post is an opportunity to take the next step.

It might be helpful to remember that focusing on clothing this week is not about the clothes that don’t fit or feel good. It is not about the stuff spilling out of the closet, nor is it about having a pristine one.

It is how you relate to the experience – with no attachment.

You can try it today with this simple one-minute “A-Wear-ness” Process:

  1. Identify an item of clothing in your wardrobe that isn’t working for you. It could be the pants that you bought because they were half price but don’t flatter you and never have. It could be the shoes that give you blisters every time you wear them. It could be the shirt that you love but can’t wear because it’s missing a button.
  2. Pull the item out of your closet, drawer, laundry basket; sit down and lay it on your lap.
  3. Close your eyes and notice how the item makes you feel. (Remember, the task is not to get rid of the item, so much as to notice the thoughts and feelings that are keeping you from letting it go.)
  4. When you feel complete put it away, repair, or release the item with love.
  5. Notice the effect of this simple practice in other areas of your life and write it down.

To help you move more stuck energy, I invite you to complete these phrases in a notebook, or your clearing journal:

  • One item of clothing that isn’t working for me is… (and how it makes me feel)…
  • What my closet is teaching me…
