Aches and Blessings of Letting Go

free-houseplant“Free. Houseplant. Needs light, love, and a bigger pot.”

Today we blessed and released our beloved Ficus that we’ve had for 22 years.

Yes, you read that right. We got her when she was small, in 1994, the year we moved into our house. She’s been a beloved member of our family ever since.

The truth is, she needed more light, a bigger pot, and more care than we were able to give her. My hair kept getting caught in her branches every time I reached around her to open the window shade. She had outgrown our space and neither of us could bear the idea of throwing her away.

So we did the best thing we could think of: clean her up, take her out to the curb, make a beautiful sign, take some photos, and let her go with love. That’s me in the photo below saying goodbye.

Back in the house we were pleased to notice that we could still feel her presence. The living room feels completely different in a good way (surprise, surprise). Dare I say, it feels a whole lot more airy, bright, and spacious.

(Shhh…We hung on longer than we needed to.)

The best part is that in less than five minutes, when we weren’t looking, someone swooped in and scooped her up. Who was it? We will never know. It happend so quickly and stealthily, that I wonder if it wasn’t the Ficus gods themselves unburdening her once and for all from us humans who’ve held on too long.

Happy travels, friend. May your next chapter be rich, and may be loved by others as much as you were loved by us.
