Why Making Your Bed Matters

Action-Making the Bed

That’s not me in the photo, but it could be, doing one of my favorite things.

Yes, I love making the bed in the morning. It’s part of my daily ritual – after a quick meditation and yoga practice.

I love smoothing the bunched-up sheets at the foot of the bed; shaking and restoring the comforter; fluffing up the pillows, placing them back, and tucking the bedspread over them; and finally, like a maestro putting the last flourishing touch on her art, laying the silk accent pillow in the middle. I step back and take it in.

It is five minutes of pure pleasure. It sets me up for the rest of the day.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. In his 2014 commencement address at the University of Texas, Admiral William McRaven shared why it’s so important to make your bed every morning. This 90 second video, with fun graphics, gives a whole new reason why making the bed matters:

I’m here. My mother purchased it today for me and I have started it. And am excited to see what changes and what kinds of clearing I can change in myself and my life and home. Thank you for allowing me to take part in this journey.

I think this also equates to keeping one’s car clean. I’ve noticed that people who have a scruffy, dirty vehicle full of trash and clutter probably also have as little respect for everything else. I’ve found it to be quite revealing and something I strive to establish as a good habit for myself… and yes, I do make my bed every day for the reasons the general gave!
